Instructions for Using LM317BTG / LM317BT
Circuit Connection:
- Input (In): Connect the input voltage to this pin.
- Output (Out): Connect the load to this pin.
- Adjust (Adj): Connect a resistor network to this pin to set the output voltage.
Setting Output Voltage:
- Use the following formula to set the output voltage: [ V_{text} = 1.25 left(1 + fracright) + I_{text} cdot R_2 ] where ( R_1 ) is the resistor connected between the output and adjust pins, ( R_2 ) is the resistor connected between the adjust and ground pins, and ( I_{text} ) is the current through the adjust pin (typically 50 μA).
Capacitors:
- Input Capacitor: A 0.1 μF capacitor is recommended between the input and ground to improve transient response and stability.
- Output Capacitor: A 1 μF capacitor is recommended between the output and ground to improve ripple rejection and stability.
Heat Dissipation:
- Ensure proper heat sinking if the regulator will be operating at high power levels to prevent overheating. The thermal resistance (θJA) is 65°C/W, so calculate the heat dissipation based on the power requirements.
Protection:
- The LM317 includes internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe area compensation to protect against overcurrent and overtemperature conditions.
Mounting:
- Mount the regulator on a heatsink if necessary, ensuring good thermal contact. Use thermal compound to enhance heat transfer.
Testing:
