Instructions for Using the KA7812:
Input Voltage:
- Ensure the input voltage is within the range of 14V to 30V.
- The input voltage should be at least 2.5V higher than the output voltage (12V) to maintain proper regulation.
Output Voltage:
- The output voltage is fixed at 12V. No external components are required to set this voltage.
Output Current:
- The maximum continuous output current is 1.5A. Do not exceed this limit to avoid overheating or damage to the regulator.
Heat Dissipation:
- For high output currents, ensure adequate heat sinking to dissipate the power dissipated by the regulator.
- Power dissipation can be calculated as ( P = (V_{text} - V_{text}) times I_{text} ).
Capacitors:
- Use a 0.33μF capacitor on the input side and a 0.1μF capacitor on the output side to stabilize the regulator and reduce ripple.
- These capacitors should be placed as close as possible to the regulator to minimize noise and improve transient response.
Mounting:
- Mount the regulator on a heatsink if the ambient temperature is high or if the output current is near the maximum rating.
- Use thermal grease between the regulator and the heatsink to enhance heat transfer.
Operating Temperature:
- The operating temperature range is from -40°C to 125°C. Ensure that the ambient temperature does not exceed these limits.
- The storage temperature range is from -65°C to 150°C.
Ripple Rejection:
- The regulator has a typical ripple rejection of 60dB at 120Hz. This helps in filtering out input voltage ripple and maintaining a stable output.
Quiescent Current:
- The quiescent current is typically 5mA with no load. This is the current consumed by the regulator itself and does not affect the output current.
Short-Circuit Protection:
- The KA7812 includes internal short-circuit protection to prevent damage in case of an output short circuit.
- However, prolonged short circuits can still cause overheating, so it is recommended to use a fuse or other overcurrent protection on the input side.
By following these instructions, you can ensure reliable operation and long-term performance of the KA7812 voltage regulator.
