Instructions for Using the LT1085CT:
Input Capacitor (CIN):
- Place a 0.1 μF ceramic capacitor as close as possible to the input pin to ensure stability and reduce noise.
- For better transient response, a larger capacitor (e.g., 10 μF) can be added in parallel.
Output Capacitor (COUT):
- A 10 μF tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitor is recommended for output filtering.
- Ensure the capacitor has a low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) to maintain stability.
Heat Sinking:
- The LT1085CT is designed to operate with a TO-220 package, which can dissipate heat effectively.
- For high current applications, consider using a heat sink to keep the junction temperature within the operating range.
Layout Considerations:
- Keep the traces from the input and output capacitors to the regulator as short as possible to minimize parasitic inductance.
- Ensure the ground plane is solid and well-connected to the regulator’s ground pin.
Overvoltage Protection:
- To protect against overvoltage conditions, consider adding a zener diode or a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) across the input and output pins.
Thermal Shutdown:
- The regulator will automatically shut down if the junction temperature exceeds 160°C to prevent damage. Allow the device to cool before resuming operation.
Output Voltage Adjustment:
- The LT1085CT provides a fixed output voltage of 1.2V. If a different output voltage is required, consider using a different regulator or an adjustable version of the LT1085 series.
Power-On Sequencing:
- Ensure that the input voltage rises smoothly and does not exceed the maximum rating of 30V.
- Avoid sudden changes in input voltage to prevent transient issues.
Storage and Handling:
- Store the device in a dry environment to prevent moisture damage.
- Handle the device with care to avoid static discharge, which can damage the internal components.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure reliable and efficient operation of the LT1085CT in your application.
