IP6818 Instructions

  1. Pin Configuration:

    • VIN: Input power supply pin.
    • BAT: Battery positive terminal.
    • GND: Ground reference.
    • EN: Enable pin (high to enable, low to disable).
    • PG: Power good output (indicates charging status).
    • TSD: Thermal shutdown pin (high to enable thermal shutdown).
  2. Basic Operation:

    • Connect the VIN pin to the power source (4.75V to 5.5V).
    • Connect the BAT pin to the positive terminal of the battery.
    • Ensure the GND pin is connected to the ground of both the power source and the battery.
    • Set the EN pin high to enable the charger.
    • Monitor the PG pin to determine if the charger is operating correctly.
  3. Charging Process:

    • Pre-charge Phase: If the battery voltage is below the pre-charge threshold, the charger will enter the pre-charge phase with a lower current (IPRG).
    • Constant Current Phase: Once the battery voltage reaches the pre-charge threshold, the charger will switch to constant current mode (ICHG).
    • Constant Voltage Phase: When the battery voltage reaches the target voltage (8.4V for a typical dual-cell battery), the charger will switch to constant voltage mode, reducing the charging current.
    • Termination: Charging will terminate when the current drops below the termination current (ITERM).
  4. Thermal Regulation:

    • The charger will reduce the charging current if the temperature exceeds the thermal regulation threshold (120°C) to prevent overheating.
  5. Protection Features:

    • Overvoltage Protection: Protects against input voltages exceeding 5.5V.
    • Overcurrent Protection: Limits the maximum charging current to prevent overcurrent conditions.
    • Overtemperature Protection: Shuts down the charger if the temperature exceeds 140°C.
    • Short-Circuit Protection: Protects against short circuits on the BAT pin.
  6. Standby Mode:

    • Set the EN pin low to put the charger into standby mode, reducing the power consumption to the standby current (ISTBY).
  7. Storage and Handling:

    • Store the IC in a dry, cool environment within the specified storage temperature range (-40°C to 85°C).
    • Handle the IC with care to avoid static discharge and physical damage.

By following these instructions, you can effectively use the IP6818 for managing the charging and protection of dual-cell lithium-ion batteries.
